Rachel's PlaceTeacher on Vacation.... June 28 Taking them down....Yesterday I read two books, The Penelopiad and Twelve Sharp. I am taking them (the books) out one by one! Libraries and bookstores of the world beware! The family and I went to Barnes and Noble yesterday so that I could spend my gift certificate. They rushed me. An hour in that place is not nearly long enough and we left with me having only spent half of my gift certificate. Barnes and Noble stores are really good to their teachers. and I appreciate that I get a discount on the books I use in my classroom. I bought Mockingbird A Portrait of Harper Lee by Charles J. Shields and I think that it will be next up on the reading list. I was reading Hearts of Atlantis by Stephen King, but I think I left that book at my mother-in-law's house. I guess it is a good thing that I saw the movie and know the gist of it or I would be going insane with leaving a book only half read. It should be a sin or something. I can think of only three books I picked up and never finished. One was The Awakening. I know it is a classic, but what a snoozer. Another was the book Private Parts by Howard Stern. A friend of mine handed me the book and told me to read it. I am pretty darn open minded, but I was revolted by that book and just couldn't finish it. Now, I can't even stand to look at that man. EEk! The other book was so bad, that a title just doesn't come to mind. I remember that my husband tried to read the book and even he couldn't finish it. It was awful--whatever it was. I am sure that there are other books that I have picked up and neglected to finish, but it is rare my friends.... The books are in need of my attention. TA TA For Now!
June 26 The AnniversaryAs of today, I have been married for 12 years. Ironically, I would have forgotten about it if my mother hadn't called yesterday to wish me a "Happy Anniversary". My husband didn't remember either, and since we have long given up Hallmark cards and flowers that die; We simply looked at one another and wished each other a "Happy Anniversary". Relatively sad, isnt' it? It is not that we don't love one another, it is just another day, right? I do not know what happened to the romance. I guess it got overlooked somewhere between toting the boys to baseball games and buying groceries. Real life has a tendency to get in the way of the romance. I sometimes wish that we could relive some of our "moments," but it just seems so wrong to mess with that perfect memory in time. You can't go back. You can't reinvent them, and planned romance is just so awkward and fake. You know? I know that our marriage isn't anywhere near perfect, yet it is comfortable. I really do love the man I am married to, and although I often say he doesn't love me, deep down, I know he really does. I am one of the lucky ones. We signed the contract and we both meant it. We have two, beautiful kids and we manage the good and bad times together. He is my best friend. Anywhoo... another year come and gone. It is cliche to say, but, "My how time flies!" June 11 The Summer Reading Begins....Every summer I read. I read anything and everything I can get my hands on.... I don't really have a game plan. I just find a book that looks interesting and go. I was in a bad mood last summer, so I didn't record my list. I have the lists from 2003 & 2004, and I will probably post them on here at a later date. I have to say that some of the best suprise books were Drowning Ruth, East of Eden, and The Things They Carried. One book that caused quite a stir in feedback was The Sound and The Fury . I had very strong opinions about that book, and honestly, I still do. Most of my friends and co-workers were aghast that I didn't just love it, love it, love it. I see the genius in the writing, but .... Don't get me started.
This summer's books have mostly been chick lit books. A few of them were good reads, but nothing to really ooh and ahh over. I am looking for that surprise. That one great book that I didn't see coming.... I will continue groping for reads and if you have any suggestions, then feel free to E-mail me at this address: mrsbays@hotmail.com
Ciao for Now,
Rachel
